The night sky glittered with stars as it stretched out before her. Isa glided through the smoke as the enemies’ camp burned. The so called ‘invaders’ were running desperately to get away from the deadly knives of the Kuni warriors. Women trained in stealth and deadly tactics roamed the edges of the burning camp. Anyone found was killed quickly.

Isa turned her attention back to the stars and the one dark spot. Blotted out by the floating temple. Known as a sanctuary for the sacred tree and its guardian. But it was more a mausoleum. The darkness that had spread amongst the humans and wild beasts tainted the magic that ran through the land like water. The guardian was charged with protecting the sacred tree but fell victim to the darkness.

Now she sleeps in the sky with the sacred tree. She uprooted the tree and magicians formed a temple around it and sent it into the sky, disconnecting the tree’s roots from the tainted magic. Once the job was done. The guardian went into a deep sleep, hibernating like a flower during winter.

As long as she slept, she was safe. Prying her eyes away from her love, Isa landed in an empty patch of sand and folded her wings. Sleeping sounds nice. Isa settled into the sand. She really missed Vera. Her laugh, the way she danced, she always followed her own beat, the beat of magic. “I miss her.” She sighed heavily letting out a steady stream of fire from her lungs burning the sand all around her. “I wish the waiting was easier.” Isa curled up into a ball and tucked her head beneath her wing. A tear fell from her amber eye, followed by another, and another. Her tears flowed like a dripping stream. They soaked the ground beneath her and soon a gently rumbling could be heard from the ground.

The sand began to shift and move down. Isa was oblivious to the movement. Slowly the ground swallowed her up, burying her beneath a cavernous amount of sand. Isa went into her own hibernation as she waited for her love to awaken.
